Fire Extinguisher Identification & Use

The fire extinguisher identification and use training course provides the skills and knowledge to
attendees in the theory of fire and the use of fire extinguishers. This training is paramount for
all workers and assists business in continuity of operations should an incident occur.

HAZMAT Awareness

This course focuses on recognition of a hazardous emergency, personnel safety, limitations of nonhazmat
personnel, hazard assessment, and the notification of the emergency response team using
safe, practical, defensive actions all of which are critical components required when dealing with a
hazardous situation. These skills are paramount for any person who will be operating around
hazardous materials. Techniques learned are practiced in field exercises. This course meets the
training requirements for National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 472 Hazardous Materials
Awareness Level.
At the end of this highly interactive training, participants will be able to:

• Understand expectations of Hazmat trained personnel
• Analyze a hazardous materials incident
• Survey a hazmat incident
• Collect hazard information

HAZMAT Operations

Pre-requisites: Hazardous materials awareness level

This course is a necessity for employees of industries who manufacture, transport or store chemicals
or other hazardous materials as well as fire and police personnel who respond to hazardous materials
incidents including spills or drug labs. Through lectures, classroom and field exercises, students learn
techniques to recognize, identify and assess degrees of risk involved with hazardous materials and
their containers, appropriate safety precautions, selection of appropriate personal protective
clothing, safe defensive control techniques to protect people, the environment and property,
implementation of the Incident Command System (ICS) and Emergency Scene Management and an
introduction to monitoring and detection equipment. Through field scenarios, students employ
classroom learning to respond to simulated incidents wearing all appropriate protective equipment
and successfully demonstrate response management, and establishment of decontamination areas
and procedures. This course meets the training requirements for National Fire Protection Agency
(NFPA) 472 Hazardous Materials Operations Level.
At the end of this highly interactive training, participants will be able to:

• Apply the incident command system to a hazmat incident
• Implement the 8 step process
• Demonstrate site management and control
• Gather information during a hazmat scenario
• Implement hazard and risk evaluation
• Select protective clothing and equipment

HAZMAT Technician

Course Duration: Instructed in English – 6 days;
Instructed in translation – 12 days

Pre-requisites: Hazardous materials operations level

This course is a necessity for responders from industry, fire, police and other personnel who could be
required to respond and operate in a hazardous material emergency response scenario including
conducting clandestine drug or explosive lab investigations. The Technician uses advanced control
techniques and directs activities using Emergency Scene Management and the Incident Command
System. Classroom discussions examine hazards and safe tactics for each Department of Transport
(DOT) class, health and chemical hazard assessment using technical resources and monitoring
equipment. Advanced scenarios can use railcar derailment, transport trailers, and other containers to
teach and practice offensive control techniques for both high and low pressure containers. This
course meets the training requirements for National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 472 Hazardous
Materials Technician Level
At the end of this highly interactive training, participants will be able to:

• Collect and synthesize chemical information
• Manage an assigned role in a hazmat scenario
• Use monitoring and detection equipment
• Participate in and manage a hazmat scenario
• Contain a leak
• Use radiation equipment

Incident Command System 100 Lvl

Course Duration: Instructed in English –1 day

The Incident Command System (ICS) 100 level course introduces participants to an incident
management system used for emergencies or disasters. Participants will gain a basic understanding
of the Incident Command System, its organization, principles, basic terminology and common
responsibilities. This course is the first in series of ICS training courses and is recommended for all
first responders and site-support personnel.
At the end of this highly interactive training, participants will be able to:

• Understand the purpose of ICS
• Comprehend basic features of ICS
• Identify incident commander and command staff functions
• Indentify general staff functions
• Identify facilities
• Understand common responsibilities

Incident Command System 200 Lvl

Course Duration: Instructed in English – 2 days;

Course Format: Classroom and practical exercises

Pre-requisites: ICS 100

This is the second course in the ICS series and is recommended for all first responders and sitesupport
personnel. The Incident Command System provides responders and supporting agencies
with a standardized method of managing any kind of emergency incident. Participants, mainly
those in an incident commander or supervisory roles at small to moderate sized incidents will
gain the skills and knowledge to effectively and efficiently manage an emergency site.
At the end of this highly interactive training, participants will be able to:

• Apply leadership and management techniques
• Perform delegation of authority and management by objectives
• Identify functional areas and positions
• Conduct briefings
• Understand organizational flexibility
• Transfer command

Ministry of Forests - Urban Forest Awareness S100

Course Duration: Instructed in English – 1 day;
Instructed in translation – 2 days
Course Format: 1/2 day classroom and 1/2 day practical exercises
Certification: BC Forestry wallet card upon successful completion
Pre-requisites: Nil

Participants in the S100 course will obtain the skills and knowledge to become qualified under the BC Ministry of Forests for wild land firefighting.

At the end of this course students will be able to:

• Utilize basic wild land firefighting equipment
• Understand the basic command structure at a wild fire incident
• Understand basic wildfire behavior
